Red Knot Ritual

The Delaware Bay's extensive sheltered beaches provide ideal habitat for both spawning horseshoe crabs and staging shorebirds. Red Knots, Ruddy Turnstones, Semipalmated Sandpipers, and other shorebirds time their migration to arrive as the crabs spawn, so the abundance of eggs can fuel their last leap to the Arctic. It is usually the end of May first part of June. I try and go every year and capture this ritual with my camera.

Check out this You Tube Red Knot video on Allison Argo the filmmaker of the PBS documentary "Crash: A Tale of Two Species.
